Purple Heart Day is an opportunity for the public to honor those people who were wounded or paid the ultimate price for their service to America. Two hundred and thirty-seven years ago, General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit. Washington designed the original badge by fashioning royal purple cloth into the shape of a heart. General Douglas MacArthur established the Purple Heart as a nod to Washington's initial creation. The medal is bestowed upon military personnel who have given an uncommon measure of devotion.
Throughout the year there are many different opportunities to honor the military, and Purple Heart Day is a special time to commemorate the select few who truly went above and beyond. Metro's Creative Image Library has many different insignias and military images to put forth memorial pages or biographies of Purple Heart recipients in communities across the country.
