National Braille Literacy Awareness Month

January

Company: The Carroll Center for the Blind
Web site: http://carroll.org

In honor of Louis Braille, who developed the Braille code more than 200 years ago, January has been designated National Braille Literacy Awareness Month. The braille code features a series of raised dots that correspond to letters of the alphabet to make text detectable for individuals who are blind. Braille, himself was a blind individual.

Even in a digital world braille remains relevant. It is being incorporated into the latest technology to be used with computers, tablets and smartphones. Also, researchers have found a strong relationship between those who can read and understand braille and a high employment rate for the blind, braille readers.
