Prosteyshiy Sputnik 2 was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, on November 3, 1957, and the first to carry a living animal. A dog named Laika was the first animal sent to space. The total weight of craft and dog was 1,121 pounds. The satellite was not capable of returning the dog to Earth, and Laika died when her air supply was gone. Laika was nicknamed Muttnik by the American Press.
