Buttons were one of the first clothing fasteners, before the invention of zippers, Velcro® and other conveniences. Buttons are not only functional they can be quite decorative as well, fascinating people who enjoy researching and collecting various types of buttons. There are organizations that specialize in the appreciation of buttons, like the National Button Society. Right from its beginning the National Button Society has emphasized the preservation and study of clothing buttons. The National Button Society now has more than 3,000 members on four continents, with 39 of the 50 states represented by state and local button clubs.
