The 10-digit phone number with area code prefix was put into effect after being developed by AT&T and Bell Labs in 1947. Codes were provided for America, Canada and parts of the Caribbean. To test it, the mayor of Englewood, NJ (area code 201) directly dialed the mayor of Alameda, CA. Previously long-distance calls had to be operator assisted. All people were able to dial long distance by 1960.
