Charles Ferdinand Dowd, a college professor and one of the early advocates of uniform time, proposed a time zone plan for the US, which he and others persuaded railroads to adopt and place in operation on this date. At exactly noon on this day, American and Canadian railroads begin using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times.
