As a young Shoshone Indian woman, Sacagawea in 1805 (with her two-month old son strapped to her back) traveled with the Lewis and Clark expedition, serving as an interpreter. It is said that the expedition could not have succeeded without her aid. She was born about 1787 and died at Fort Manuel on the Missouri River. Few other women have been so often honored. There are statues, fountains and memorials of her, and her name has been given to a mountain peak. In 2000 the US Mint issued a $1 coin honoring her.
