December 20th, 2024 A bill empowering the Librarian of Congress to name, annually, a poet laureate in poetry was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on December 20, 1985. The first poet laureate of the US was Robert Penn Warren. Source: poets.org/united-states-poet-laureate
