The Congress of the US passed Public Law 94-168, known as the Metric Conversion Act of 1975. This act declared that the SI (International System of Units) would be the country's basic system of measurement and established the United States Metric Board, which was responsible for planning, coordination and implementation of the nation's voluntary conversion to SI. Metric became the preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce, but the law permitted the use of United States customary units in non-business activities.
