On National French Fry Day, people all over can munch on one of the favorite comfort foods available. Potatoes are delicious in many different forms, but perhaps none is as beloved as fries. Thinly cut and deep-fried, fries are salty, crunchy and the ideal accompaniment to all types of meals. They even can be meals in and of themselves, especially when topped with cheese and other delights.

Despite the name, French fries are not French at all. Certain food historians attest that they may have actually originated in an area that is now modern-day Belgium. Fries go by many different names depending upon the region. Fries, French-fried potatoes, chips, finger chips, hot chips, and pomme frites are some of the names given to the dish. Area restaurants can showcase French fries on National French Fry Day.
