A global organization with programs in 170 countries, the Special Olympics is a program of competitive sports events fashioned after the Olympic Games intended for mentally challenged athletes. The goal of Special Olympics is to reach out to the almost 200 million people in the world with intellectual disabilities. Through sports, the athletes can see themselves for their abilities, not disabilities. Their world is opened with acceptance and understanding and they become confident and empowered by their accomplishments.
