Hurricane Sandy was a devastating storm that affected much of the northeast United States as well as parts of Canada. Hurricane Sandy, as both a hurricane and a post-tropical cyclone, was directly responsible for at least 147 deaths in the Northeast United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center. The death toll in the United States directly attributed to Sandy included 48 in New York, 12 in New Jersey, 5 in Connecticut, 2 in Pennsylvania, and five in other states. In the Caribbean, Haiti (54 deaths) and Cuba (11 deaths) were the countries affected the most, and there was one death in Canada.
The hurricane additionally caused millions of dollars in property damage, and left many homes underwater. It took months to start rebuilding, and many areas were damaged beyond repair. The storm, coupled with high tides made for a catastrophic event, the likes of which will not be seen again for some time.
