February is nationally recognized as "Spay/Neuter Awareness Month." The purpose is to encourage people to have their pets sterilized before the spring and summer months when there is a rampant overproduction of puppies and kittens. During that time most animal shelters experience an unmanageable increase in animal intake. Spay/neutering helps to decrease those numbers and saves pets' lives. Spay/Neuter Awareness Month culminates on World Spay Day.

This is the perfect time for veterinarians and spay/neuter clinics to put promotional messages into full force. Ninety percent of animals entering shelters are not fixed, and euthanasia kills more companion animals than any other disease because of overcrowding. Spreading the word about the importance of spay/neutering (by age 4 months) is key to maintaining healthy and happy pet families.
