Incorporated as a city in 1837, Chicago was situated in an area to become a transportation and trade mecca. The Illinois & Michigan Canal created a link between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes, but soon later railroads became an integral transportation method. Chicago rivals New York City and Los Angeles for travelers, and The Windy City has made a name for itself throughout history.
