March
Dogs, cats and even bunnies get plenty of attention at area shelters and rescue events. But what about the humble guinea pig. These furry friends are popular pet store purchases, and then get turned over to shelters when some children outgrow the newness of the pet. That leaves many guinea pigs waiting for their next friendly home. The first National Adopt a Guinea Pig Month took place back in 2002 when the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals decided to shed light of the problem of guinea pigs in shelters. The event continues to raise awareness and educate the public about humane pet ownership and guinea pig rescue.
