National Afternoon Tea Month celebrates the tea-drinking tradition that began around 200 years ago in the United Kingdom. Many people still enjoy a late afternoon cuppa with a light snack. Traditionally afternoon tea is served between 3:30 and 5 pm with small sandwiches, cakes, pastries, scones, bread and jam. The custom was believed to have started to bridge the gap between an early lunch and a late dinner, so that individuals would not be famished.
