Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14, and the day was named after an early Christian martyr. Now Valentine's Day is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages. The first mass-produced valentine cards were sold in the 1840s.
