Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Warren Ford was born on April 8, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. She moved two times before her family settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Betty worked at a number of jobs before both her first marriage and then her second marriage, and at one point ran a dance studio. She studied modern dance and went on to perform with the Martha Graham Auxiliary Dance Company. Betty met Gerald Ford in 1947 and married him the following year when he was a Republican U.S. Congressman. The Fords were thrust into the limelight when Gerald Ford was sworn in as President after the resignation of Richard Nixon during the Watergate Scandal.
