The ZIP code is the system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The name ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, is written properly in uppercase letters and was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, when senders use it. The US Postal Service introduced the five-digit zip code on this day in 1963.
Today ZIP codes are used for more than just mail. They're an important component of sales and marketing applications, internet technology, data collection and GIS.
