IBM's first personal computer was introduced to the public on August 12, 1981. It cost the equivalent of $3,000 in today's currency. While the company was known for making larger, mainframe computers, this was its first attempt at the home market. Eventually more IBM-compatible computers were made by competitors than IBM itself.
