October was selected to commemorate the first two lesbian and gay marches on Washington in October 1979 and 1987. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) History Month, (now expanded to LGBTQQ) has served not only as a time to study and celebrate gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered history, but also to focus the public's attention on related issues, such as discrimination, marriage rights, AIDS, domestic partner benefits, and more. It also helps to provide mainstream America with a more positive view of all people.
