The microwave oven revolutionized the way people cook on a daily basis. Microwaves can heat up foods and beverages in record time, helping to streamline meal creation. Plus, due to their safer way of cooking from an open flame, microwaves are commonly found in dorm rooms and other small spaces where traditional stoves would be a hazard. By 1986 roughly a quarter of American households had microwave ovens. But a decade later that percentage had risen to 90%. Today microwaves are mainstays in office buildings, restaurants and of course, homes.
