National Poinsettia Day

December 12th, 2021

Web site: http://www.poinsettiaday.com/

Poinsettias are commonly seen during the Christmas season. Despite being a popular plant to display during the holidays, poinsettias actually are native to the tropics and prefer a warm climate in which to grow. National Poinsettia Day marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist, physician and Minister to Mexico who in 1828 sent cuttings of the plant he'd discovered in Southern Mexico to his home in Charleston, South Carolina. Poinsettias come in various colors. Interestingly, the showy colored parts of poinsettias that most people think of as the flowers are actually colored bracts (modified leaves). The yellow flowers, or cyathia, are in the center of the colorful bracts.

Poinsettias are the best selling potted plant in the U.S. and Canada. Promote the sales of poinsettia plants available at nearby garden centers and various home retailers.
