National Card Playing Day

December 28th, 2021

On National Card Playing Day people all over can grab a deck of playing cards and engage in their favorite games. Playing cards were created several centuries ago and were believed to have originated in the East and then made their way to Europe. One can thank Americans for the addition of "Jokers" in the decks. The Joker was initially referred to as "the best bower,"  which is terminology that originates in the popular trick-taking game of euchre, which was popular in the mid-19th century, and refers to the highest trump card.

Playing card games and other games is beneficial for many reasons. They promote socialization and help strengthen the mind through strategizing and memory recall. Metro's monthly puzzle offerings run the gamut from cryptograms to sudoku to crosswords to keep minds fresh.
